An open international competition was conducted for the proposed Museum of World Writing to be constructed in Seoul. The site is on the edge of a major waterway and in the middle of a parkland and recreational precinct.
The design derives from the assembly of two forms; a truncated triangular prism and a landscape bridge which spans over the major public spaces and exhibition area, and connects the waterfront with the city.
The dominant triangular prism responds to the formally planned city, creating a break and counterpoint to the geometry of the roads, waterway and city buildings.
The bridge is an extension of the parkland that surrounds the site.
The design creates an allegorical link to the purpose of the museum – writing as a bridge to knowledge and understanding between people, the translucent prism emitting and absorbing light; an analogy to clarity, enlightenment and reason.
